How to Backup WhatsApp Messages and Restore them again

WhatsApp officially allows you to Backup WhatsApp Messages along with all media files such as text, photos, voice recordings and Videos, and you can also restore them whenever you want. This feature is available for all Android users who are using Android 2.3.4 or higher version of Android OS.

WhatsApp doesn’t save user data on their server like Telegram. In other words, WhatsApp isn’t a cloud-based messaging service. Consequently, there are no ways to recover your WhatsApp conversations if you are Phone is lost or stolen unless you have backed-up your WhatsApp chats.

If you are an Android user, then you can backup your WhatsApp messages to Google Drive or SD card. However, by the default, WhatsApp will create a backup file on your local storage (SD card) at 4:00 am every day, the backup file will be stored at the following path of WhatsApp folder “sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases.”

Although the WhatsApp’s auto backup feature help to recover accidentally deleted media files such as text messages, images, voice messages, videos Etc., it wouldn’t be a good solution to recover WhatsApp conversation if our Phone is lost or stolen. However, when you select Google Drive to store your backup files, then you can bring back your all WhatsApp conversation to your new Phone even your old Phone lost or stolen.

Let’s take a look at “How we can backup and restore our WhatsApp chats on either SD card or Google Drive.”

Backup WhatsApp messages to SD card

As I talked above, WhatsApp will automatically create a backup file on your local storage. However, you can create a backup file manually by tapping the “backup” button, whenever you want. Follow the below method to do so.

Step 1: Open the WhatsApp messenger.


Step 2: Go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup.


Step 3: Tap the “BACKUP” button.


That’s it; now your backup file will be stored in “WhatsApp Folder” on “sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases.”


Backup WhatsApp messages to Google Drive

Step 1: Launch the WhatsApp messenger.

Step 2: Navigate to Settings > Chats > Chats backup.


Step 3: Select “Backup to Google Drive” under the “Google Drive settings” section.


Step 4: Tap the “Only when I tap Backup” or you can choose other options whether Daily, Weekly or Monthly if you prefer to Backup WhatsApp messages to Google Drive automatically.


Step 5: Then go back to “Account” under the “Google Drive settings” section and select your Google account If you haven’t one, then you can create a new account by tapping the “Add account” button.


Step 6: Finally, tap the “Backup” button, now you chats will be stored in Google Drive.

Note: By the default, your all media files will be stored there, unless Video files. And if you wish to create backup file along with Videos then simply select “Include Videos” checkbox under the “Google Drive settings” section.

How to Restore WhatsApp Messages

If you already have made a backup to SD card or Google Drive, then you can simply restore your previous WhatsApp messages to your new Phone or reinstalled WhatsApp application. Did you forget to create a backup file? Don’t worry WhatsApp have had done for you at 4:00 am, last night. But it wouldn’t help you if your phone is lost or stolen except you have made a backup on Google Drive. Additionally, you can also perform this feature to retrieve accidentally deleted messages.

Step 1: Install and launch the WhatsApp messenger to your new Phone or open reinstalled WhatsApp application.

Step 2: Register with your Phone number that you have already used to backup files.


Step 3: Now WhatsApp will automatically search and inform you about the backup files when installation process.

Step 4: If you already have made a local backup, then it will ask you to restore files from your Phone’s storage, If you already have stored backup files at Google Drive then it will show you backup files from Google Drive to restore them.

Step 5: Then tap the restore button, it will bring back all of your WhatsApp chats to the new application.

You’re done, now you can also see restored messages on Desktop version of WhatsApp


Retrieve accidentally deleted WhatsApp messages.

Do you suddenly delete any of your WhatsApp conversation? And do you wish to recover them? Then simply uninstall WhatsApp application and reinstall it and make a restore. You can also tap the WhatsApp’s “Clear data” and “Clear Cache” button at “Application Manager” Instead of uninstalling WhatsApp.

Note: You will lose all the conversations you have sent and received since the backup was created.

    well, sir, this is a good idea but are you mentioned that this feature only available in the only android but I take backups in my windows phone through one drive and it works fine
